About this hotel

Alpenhotel Wurzer stands on Dorfstraße in the centre of Filzmoos, a village at just over 1,000 m beneath the Bischofsmütze. The valley station of the Papageno gondola is around 200 m away as the crow flies, and the Großbergbahn chairlift about 450 m, so both sides of the local ski area start on foot. That area is small: 20 km of pistes, almost all easy or intermediate and below the tree line, inside the Ski amadé network. Rooms have a balcony or patio, and the garden has a sunbathing lawn and a café terrace. Wellness is limited to an infrared cabin and a solarium. There is a ski storeroom with a boot dryer, parking is free and Wi-Fi is free in the public areas. The nearest railway station is Eben im Pongau; Salzburg is the arrival airport.

Our take

Alpenhotel Wurzer sits at Dorfstraße 3, roughly 200 m as the crow flies from the valley station of the Papageno gondola, the six-seater that climbs from about 1,050 m to the Rossbrand at roughly 1,590 m. In Filzmoos that short walk is the whole point: no ski bus, no car, and the Großbergbahn chairlift is about 450 m away across the village. Its 9.7 from 265 guest reviews is the highest of the six Filzmoos hotels we cover. I would book it for families and intermediates who ski the local 20 km and value a balcony over a pool. Anyone who wants a swimming pool, a full spa or dependable Wi-Fi in the room should pick another house: Wi-Fi is free in the public areas, and the wellness is an infrared cabin and a solarium.

  • Start on the Papageno gondola: the 2.7 km Papageno run, the longest in Filzmoos with about 540 m of vertical, is a wide intermediate piste that takes you back down to the valley.
  • Cross-country skiers ride the same gondola: the Rossbrand high-altitude trail, groomed for classic and skating, starts from the top station at around 1,600 m, some 500 m above the village loops.
  • Keep one evening for the 3 km toboggan run from the Kleinbergalm, at the top of the Großbergbahn: it is lit after dark, and you can hike up or take the shuttle.
  • Strong skiers finish the Großberg quickly: the Michaela Kirchgasser FIS run, red at the top and then black, is only 1.2 km long, and the Ski amadé pass also covers the far larger areas nearby.

Why we love it

  • Papageno gondola and Großbergbahn chairlift both reached on foot
  • Garden with a sunbathing lawn and a café terrace
  • Free parking, so a car can stay put all week
  • Highest guest score of the six Filzmoos hotels we cover
Why guests love it

Filzmoos is a gentle place to learn: of its 20 km of pistes, 9 are graded easy, 10 intermediate and just 1 km difficult, and the children's learning area sits at the bottom of the valley beside the village. From Alpenhotel Wurzer that means a short walk to lessons instead of a bus ride with skis. Schischule Filzmoos runs a Kinderclub that takes children from two and a half for snow games, and the ski schools offer ski kindergarten for ages four to ten. Older children who want something more playful can try the filZOO funslope, opened in the 2023/24 season off the Mooslehen six-seater, nearly 2 km from the hotel. Wellness here is an infrared cabin and a solarium, with no pool, so families who want afternoons in the water will miss one. For young skiers who should reach the snow without a bus, this is the house I would choose in Filzmoos.
