Alpine luxury

This guide lists 58 luxury ski hotels in 31 resorts, rated 9.19 out of 10 on average across 16,631 guest reviews; 38 of them are five-star. Cortina d'Ampezzo has the most (five), then Bormio and Val d'Isère with four each. My test for a luxury ski hotel is not the marble: it is the number of minutes from the bedroom to the first lift, and whether the ski room lets you leave boots and skis downstairs. A grand house that needs a taxi to the gondola every morning loses to a smaller one at the bottom of the run. In Val d'Isère, Les Barmes de l'Ours stands at the foot of La Face de Bellevarde, about 100 m from the central lifts, so it is the one I would book for strong skiers who want an early run on Bellevarde. Le K2 Chogori (9.9 from 26 reviews) and La Mourra (9.8) are the two best-rated of the four Val d'Isère hotels here, and Experimental Chalet (8.7) is the most reviewed of the four, with 103 reviews. The resort shares its ski area with Tignes, so from any of them you have a whole valley of terrain to cover. Cortina d'Ampezzo is a town first and a ski resort second, and that shapes the choice. The Tofane slopes, where the women's Olympic alpine races were run in February 2026, form a separate lift sector from Faloria, so I would sleep near the centre and take the ski bus to whichever side I ski that day. Ancora Cortina sits on Corso Italia, about 400 m from the Faloria cable car, and Ambra Cortina is in the historic centre, close to the pedestrian streets: both suit skiers who want their evenings on foot. Grand Hotel Ampezzo (9.8) leads the five Cortina hotels on this list, with Ancora and Hotel Tofana Cortina next at 9.5. Rosapetra SPA Resort is the outlier: it stands at Zuel, about 2.4 km from the centre near the old Olympic ski jump, so it suits a quiet spa week better than evenings in town. Ambra, rated 9.0 from 540 reviews, is the most reviewed of the five, a useful signal for a small hotel where one bad season shows quickly. Bormio's four hotels show why a luxury label says nothing about the walk to the lift. Sottovento, on Via Santa Barbara, is about 1 km on foot from the Bormio 2000 gondola, and Palace Hotel Wellness & Beauty, also in town, runs a shuttle to the slopes. QC Grand Hotel Bagni Nuovi is a thermal-spa hotel at the Bagni Nuovi baths in Valdidentro, outside the town and a drive from the gondola. Sunny Valley Mountain Lodge is the opposite case: at about 2,700 m, at the top of the Vallalpe cable car above Santa Caterina Valfurva, reached only by lift. Arosa is where one hotel owns the shortcut. The Tschuggen Grand Hotel has its own lift, the Tschuggen Express, which reaches the Arosa Lenzerheide ski area in under four minutes, and its 5,000 m² Bergoase spa was designed by Mario Botta. Valsana sits on the Obersee lakeside promenade, about 600 m from the Weisshorn gondola. BelArosa, rated 10 from only five reviews, is a few minutes' walk from the centre and the cable cars. Five reviews is a thin sample, so I give Tschuggen's 283 more weight. In Kitzbühel, location splits the three hotels clearly. Hotel Weisses Rössl is on Bichlstrasse in the centre, about 400 m from the Hahnenkamm cable car, the right base for skiing the Streif side and walking to dinner. The Tennerhof, a Relais & Châteaux house on Griesenauweg, is roughly a 20-minute walk from the Hahnenkamm but about 9 minutes on foot from the Kitzbüheler Horn cable car. Grand Tirolia sits on the Eichenheim golf course, away from the lifts, so plan on driving each morning; with 1,831 reviews it is the most reviewed of the three. Several famous names on this list deserve a line. Badrutt's Palace (9.2, 119 reviews) and Hotel GRACE LA MARGNA (9.6) are the two St. Moritz entries. In Zermatt, the Schweizerhof is a short walk from the main station and about two minutes from the Gornergrat railway, while the Monte Rosa Boutique Hotel scores higher at 9.5. Higashiyama Niseko Village, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, sits at the base of Mount Niseko Annupuri with ski-in ski-out access. Kempinski Palace Engelberg (9.3, 611 reviews) and No 14 Verbier (9.7 from 43) are the other Swiss names worth knowing. Jackson Hole is where a famous name misleads most often. The three hotels listed here are in or above the town of Jackson, not in Teton Village at the foot of the resort. The Wort Hotel and The White Buffalo Club are downtown, a short walk from Town Square, with the START bus running out to the Village. Hotel Yellowstone at Jackson Hole, adults-only and rated 9.7, sits on East Gros Ventre Butte about 5 miles from the square. Book them for restaurants and evenings in town, not to be first in the tram line. Park City changed in December 2025: the new Sunrise Gondola, with 10-seat cabins, now leaves Canyons Village from the door of Pendry Park City, which makes it the most practical of the three Park City hotels here for skiing, even though Main & SKY is rated slightly higher, at 8.8. Main & SKY is on Main Street, the better base for Old Town evenings, and Sweetwater Lift Lodge is the most reviewed of the three, with 880 reviews. In Gstaad the logic flips again. The village centre is car-free, and the Eggli and Wispile gondolas both leave from the village itself, so The Alpina, Ultima and Le Grand Bellevue keep you close to a first lift without a car. The snow-sure skiing is elsewhere: Glacier 3000 is a 20-minute drive away, with a PostAuto bus to Col du Pillon. Of the three, Ultima is the best rated at 9.6, and Le Grand Bellevue has the most reviews, 160. The rest of the list, resort by resort. In Austria, Das Central in Sölden scores 9.3 and the Bergland Design- und Wellnesshotel 9.1 from 203 reviews; ZillergrundRock in Mayrhofen holds 9.2 from 545 reviews, and the Salzburgerhof in Zell am See 8.9 from 333. In the Dolomites, Alpen Suite Hotel (9.4, 269 reviews) and Cerana Relax Hotel (9.2) are the Madonna di Campiglio pair, Hotel Sassongher (9.4) and Sporthotel Panorama (8.8) the Corvara pair, and Amonti Wellnessresort in Cadipietra rates 8.9. Hotel Gisserhof in San Giovanni in Val Aurina, at 7.7, has the lowest score of any hotel here. In France, Hôtel Daria-I Nor in L'Alpe d'Huez rates 9.3 from 146 reviews and Au Coeur du Village in La Clusaz 9.4. Jiva Hill Resort, in the Jura near Crozet, is the outlier: a resort whose mountain-view balconies look over its own golf course, rated 9.2 from 1,003 reviews. Park Chalet Village in Livigno has 1,510 reviews at 9.4, one of the largest samples on the list. Hotel La Neige in Hakuba rates 9.0 from 285. In the Rockies, Telluride has Lumière (9.8) and Dunton Town House (9.6), and Aspen Square is a condominium hotel rated 9.1 from 167 reviews. Five entries are apartments rather than hotels, so you book space and a kitchen rather than full hotel service. Black Eagle Luxury Appartements in Mayrhofen (9.6 from 723 reviews) and K1 Mountain Chalet in Brunico (9.7 from 304) have the strongest records. Chalet Everest in Prato Nevoso rates 8.8 from 223. The two-bedroom apartment with a Mont Blanc view in Combloux scores 9.7, but from only 19 reviews, and the penthouse in Mammoth Lakes shows 7.0 from just two reviews, far too few to judge; I would not book either on its score alone. Who should skip this list: skiers who judge a hotel only by its distance to the snow. Most of these houses compete on spa and dining (54 of the 58 have a spa, 49 a pool or hot tub) rather than on doorstep skiing. If clicking into your bindings outside the door matters more than a long afternoon in the pool, start from the ski-in ski-out page of your resort and come back here for the evenings.

Chalet

A chalet hotel is a hotel in a wood-built, chalet-style house, with reception, rooms and a restaurant, not a private chalet you rent with a host. SnowHotels lists 113 chalet-style stays; the Massif des Brasses has the most in one resort (8), then La Clusaz and Madonna di Campiglio (7), and Gstaad, Val d'Isère, Chamonix and Banff (6). Not all are hotels: Résidence Les Grandes Alpes and Chalet Inarpa in La Clusaz are apartments with kitchens. In every resort the same choice comes back: the old village and its wood, or a front door near a lift. Know the vocabulary before you search. In British ski travel, a "catered chalet" is a house for roughly 6 to 20 guests where a live-in host cooks breakfast, afternoon tea and dinner, and a tour operator's "chalet hotel" is a larger version for 30 to 180 guests, often with British staff. Most stays on this page are hotels or apartment residences in a chalet building, where you book a room or a flat, not the whole house. If you want a house with a cook for your group, you are looking for a catered chalet. Gstaad is one of the resorts where the style is a rule, like Méribel in France with its wood, stone and slate code. Since the 1950s, new buildings in Gstaad have had to follow the chalet style in timber, but older grand hotels such as the Gstaad Palace are not chalets. Hotel Arc-en-ciel (9.2 from 1,071 reviews) stands next to the Eggli cable car. Hotel Alphorn sits close to the Wispile and Eggli lifts, with a ski school right behind it. Le Grand Chalet (9.5 from 280 reviews) is on a small hill above the centre, so the view costs a climb back. In Val d'Isère, the chalet feel is strongest in Le Fornet, a hamlet of stone and wood at the end of the valley. Chalet Hotel du Fornet has the best score of the six Val d'Isère chalet hotels, 9.8 from 101 reviews, 200 metres from the lifts, with a free shuttle into Val d'Isère. The Fornet cable car takes you up towards the Iseran and Pointe du Montet sectors. In the main village, Hôtel Avancher (9.3 from 600 reviews) is 50 metres from the free ski bus, and Les Equinoxes has ski-to-door access, family rooms and kitchen facilities. La Clusaz and Madonna di Campiglio show the trap of a chalet away from town. Chalet-Hôtel du Borderan (9.1) is 20 metres from the Combe des Juments chairlift, but 3 km from the village centre; Hôtel Les Airelles gives you the lifts and the village from the same door. In Madonna, Hotel Chalet Del Sogno (9.1) is 25 metres from the Spinale Express, while Chalet Campiglio Imperiale (9.3 from 380 reviews) is 4 km out, and Bio Hotel Hermitage relies on a free shuttle to the lifts. Elsewhere, the lift decides again. In Chamonix, Chalet Hôtel Le Prieuré (8.8 from 2,446 reviews) is a short walk from the Aiguille du Midi cable car, and Eden Hotel in Les Praz sits near the Flégère cable car. In Banff, Sunshine Mountain Lodge (8.8 from 868 reviews) is the ski-in/ski-out choice, up at Sunshine Village, while Buffalo Mountain Lodge on Tunnel Mountain is 9 km from Mount Norquay. In the Massif des Brasses, 7 of the 8 stays are rented chalets, and a car makes things much easier. My pick for the wood and the lift together is Hotel Arc-en-ciel in Gstaad, with the Eggli cable car next door. If skiing comes first, I would book Chalet Del Sogno in Madonna, by the Spinale Express, or the Chalet Hotel du Fornet for the quiet hamlet and the cable car. I would not take the Borderan or Campiglio Imperiale if you want to walk to dinner in the village, and I would not book any of these stays if what you want is a whole house with your own cook.
