Hotels in Rottenmann

Rottenmann is a small town in the Palten valley of Upper Styria, below the Rottenmanner Tauern, and in winter it is a base for ski tourers and for skiers who drive to small areas, not a ski resort: there are no lifts in town. Two inns are listed here. Gasthaus Zum Stadtwald is the better rated, 8.8 from 306 reviews, and Gasthof Brauerei Kofler, rated 8.1 from 413 reviews, brews its own beer, which makes it the livelier choice for dinner after a day out. The nearest slopes are at Hohentauern, reached from the A9 exit at Trieben over the B114 pass road: the operator lists 11 km of pistes between a 1,800 m summit and a middle station at 1,550 m, plus the 14 km Tauern-Loipe for skating and classic. The insider use of Rottenmann is ski touring: the Großer Bösenstein, the classic tour of the Rottenmanner Tauern, starts from the Hohentauern side, and from Rottenmann station, at 674 m, a marked trail climbs through the Stadtwald to the Rottenmanner Hütte in about two and a half hours. The trap is expecting snow on the valley floor at that altitude. I would sleep here for touring and a couple of short piste days, not for a full ski week.
