Our take
The areitXpress gondola leaves from just below Familotel Amiamo in Schüttdorf, and its ten-seat cabins reach 1,400 m on the Schmittenhöhe in about seven minutes, so the ski day starts without a bus. The hotel advertises itself as ski-in/ski-out, directly on the piste. That, plus childcare from birth in the Happy Club (ages 0 to 16), is why I would send families with small children here rather than to a hotel in central Zell am See. Board is all-inclusive without alcohol, ski rental is in the house and instructors come to the hotel every day. Couples without children, or anyone who wants the old town's bars after dinner, should sleep in town: Schüttdorf is the quieter southern district.
- Rent skis in the hotel and collect your lift passes at reception on arrival day, so the first morning goes straight from the room to the areitXpress valley station.
- Children too young for ski school start in the Happy Mini-Ski Club in the hotel garden; the practice slope for older children is about 50 m away.
- From the areitXpress top station at 1,400 m, carry on with Areitbahn II and then III, or with the Glocknerbahn, to reach the higher runs of the Schmittenhöhe.
- Without a car, use the hotel's free shuttle to Zell am See station, 3 km away; Salzburg airport is 80.5 km by road.
- The Schmittenhöhe starts at about 760 m in the valley, so in December and late March the last metres back to the hotel depend on snowmaking; if the bottom of the run is closed, ride the areitXpress down instead.

Why guests love itWith 40 rooms and every service aimed at families, Amiamo is built for a ski week in which parents also get to ski. The Happy Club takes children from birth to 16, there is a baby area with equipment and supplies, and prams and baby carriers can be borrowed. Family suites measure up to 54 m², mostly with two or three rooms and space for two to six people, which matters when a toddler naps after lunch. The all-inclusive board, without alcohol, covers breakfast, a midday snack, afternoon coffee and cake, and dinner as a menu or buffet. The 9.4 average rests on only 15 reviews, so I treat it as promising rather than proven. I would book it for children from babies to early teens; I would not book it for a couples' week.
