Sunshine Mountain Lodge
The one hotel up in Sunshine Village, reached only by gondola
About this hotel
Sunshine Mountain Lodge is the only hotel inside the Sunshine Village ski area, in the upper village at around 2,160 m, where the resort's three mountains (Mount Standish, Lookout Mountain and Goat's Eye) meet. The gondola base is about 20 minutes' drive from Banff; from Calgary you follow the Trans-Canada Highway west, and airport coaches such as the Banff Airporter and Brewster run to Banff, where the free resort shuttle picks up at hotels in town. Lodge guests park near Creekside Lodge with a parking pass and check in there from 4 pm.
No road reaches the door: checked bags go up to the room while you ride the gondola, about 20 minutes. Up top, the Strawberry Express, the high-speed quad that serves the green runs from the village, loads a few steps from the entrance. Skis and boards stay in a West Wing locker, never in the room. In the evening the hotel claims Banff's largest outdoor hot tub, and dinner is at Chimney Corner or Eagle's Nest. On departure day, bags are brought down within two hours, so the last day is still a ski day.
- Only hotel inside the Sunshine Village ski area, at about 2,160 m
- Strawberry Express quad loads a few steps from the door
- Check-in at Creekside Lodge at the base, bags carried up to the room
- Outdoor hot tub billed as Banff's largest, plus Chimney Corner and Eagle's Nest
- Ski and board locker for every room in the West Wing
Our take
Sunshine Mountain Lodge is the only ski-in/ski-out hotel in Banff National Park, and the gain is concrete: no gondola in the morning, a short walk to the Strawberry Express for its 9 am opening, and no 20-minute ride down when the chairs stop at 4 pm. I would book it for skiers who want to be on the chairs at opening without the commute from town, and for evenings in the outdoor hot tub. I would not book it for anyone who wants Banff town at night, a kitchen, or the freedom to pop down to the car: outside gondola hours, the way down is a shuttle arranged a day ahead, for a fee.
- Buy your Parks Canada pass before arriving: it is required for any stay in Banff National Park and goes on the dashboard of the car you leave at the base.
- Pack snacks and drinks in Banff before riding up: rooms have no mini-fridge, and the gondola stops in the evening except on Fridays.
- With children, ask for a West Wing Loft or Premier room: they add a queen Murphy bed, while the Deluxe rooms only add a single trundle.
- Friday is the one evening the gondola runs until 10:30 pm this season, which makes it the easiest night for dinner in Banff town.
- Leave skis in your West Wing locker, not at the door: boards and skis are not allowed in rooms.
- On departure day, hand in your bags at check-out: they reach the base within two hours, so you can ski until the chairs close.
Why we love it
- No gondola ride before the first chair
- Strawberry Express quad a few steps away
- Large outdoor hot tub once the lifts close
- Bags delivered from the base to the room
Why guests love itSunshine Mountain Lodge suits families whose children already ski: the Strawberry Express, which serves the easy green runs, starts in the village, Sunshine's Snow School runs lessons from the same base, and the front desk lends toboggans for the evening. Inside there is a family movie room, activity rooms and board games for the hours after the chairs stop at 4 pm. The weak points are practical. The gondola takes about 20 minutes and is not heated, rooms have no fridge for milk or snacks, and the Deluxe Balcony and Waterfall rooms sleep three at most, with a queen bed and a single trundle. For four, I would pick a West Wing Loft and bring food up from Banff.
