Our take
L'Amara stands at the foot of the Avoriaz cliff, facing south over the Morzine valley, with the pistes about 30 m from the residence, which is what you want in a resort where you cannot drive to your door. The apartments sleep 4 to 10 in one to four bedrooms, many with balconies and some with mountain views. The heated indoor pool with a children's paddling pool, the sauna, hammam and gym are included; the Deep Nature spa, with its outdoor hot tub, is paid separately. I would choose it for families and groups who want space and pool afternoons. Travellers expecting hotel service and a restaurant every evening will find a residence.
- Avoriaz is car-free: cars stay in the resort car park and the last stretch to the residence is by shuttle, which takes time, so arrive before dark with luggage that rolls on snow.
- Covered parking at the residence is limited and cannot be booked ahead; it comes at a supplement, so plan on the resort car park if you arrive on a busy Saturday.
- With children under school age, look at the Village des Enfants run by Annie Famose, close to the residence, before booking ski school elsewhere.
- For a second pool day, the Aquariaz water park, with more than 2,000 m² of pools and slides, is a short walk from L'Amara.
Why we love it

Why guests love itA heated indoor pool with its own paddling pool, a kids' club called La récré and apartments up to four bedrooms make L'Amara one of the easiest bases in Avoriaz for families. Small children can splash while older ones swim, and the Village des Enfants of Annie Famose, a short walk away, handles the youngest skiers. Baby kits can be rented by the week. The catches are practical: no car at the door, a shuttle from the car park with all the bags, and a key collection window in the early evening. Some apartments look onto the mountain and others do not, so ask for a view when booking. For a week of skiing with young children and a pool every afternoon, I would book it ahead of most Avoriaz hotels.
