Thirty metres from the Olympe lift is the reason I would book Hotel des Alpes in Brides-les-Bains: you step out of the door and ride up towards the slopes without a shuttle. It is a two-star address with balcony rooms, a flowered garden and a restaurant cooking regional dishes, and its 9.1 score from 120 guests is strong. Evenings in Brides-les-Bains are quiet rather than lively.

Our en suite room had a balcony, and the small flowered garden was a pleasant place for a coffee on sunny afternoons. Dinners at the restaurant featured regional dishes that were hearty and well cooked. Simple, friendly and great value, with a 9.1 rating that matched our experience.
