The fresh South Tyrolean breakfast buffet was superb, and discounts at a nearby spa were a nice bonus after skiing.

Feldmessner sits in Riscone, about 500 metres from the Plan de Corones ski area, so getting to the lifts each morning was quick. The hotel overlooks the Dolomites, and rooms have balconies with mountain views. Free parking and a complimentary shuttle to the train station make it easy to arrive by car or by rail. With a 9.3 score from 64 guest reviews, my advice is to book early for the busiest winter weeks.

Hotel Krondlhof gave our family a room with a private bathroom, a balcony with mountain views and free WiFi. After skiing, the indoor swimming pool was the kids' favourite, while we enjoyed the sauna and spa and wellness centre. The restaurant served Italian dishes with vegetarian and gluten-free options, which helped us a lot, and breakfast offered continental, buffet and Italian choices. On sunny days the terrace was lovely.

Hotel Goldene Rose is the central address I recommend in Brunico for families who want the town on the doorstep and an easy ski commute. The ski bus stop is 20 metres away and takes you to the Kronplatz slopes, 3 km from the hotel. Rooms have traditional light-wood furniture and wood-beamed ceilings for a warm Alpine feel. My advice: choose it for its town-centre position and the bus link, and do not expect a spa, which the hotel does not list.
