Hotels in Versam
Versam is a small Graubünden village on the south rim of the Rhine Gorge, the Ruinaulta, at the mouth of the Safiental, and it suits skiers who want a quiet inn and do not mind driving to the lifts. The slopes of Flims Laax sit on the other side of the gorge, so every big ski day starts in the car, not on a chairlift. Gasthaus Rössli is the one hotel listed in the village, rated 8.5 from 245 reviews: a simple inn of 15 rooms with its own house brewery, private parking and a breakfast buffet. The road through Versam runs between Bonaduz and Ilanz on the quieter side of the gorge, away from the main road through Flims and Laax. Down in the gorge, Versam-Safien station on the Rhaetian Railway is where buses leave for the Safiental. That valley is the reason to sleep here: at Tenna, the world's first solar-powered ski lift, opened for the 2011/12 winter and about 450 m long, gives small children a gentle slope and a small snowpark, and at the head of the valley the Thalkirch cross-country trail runs about 6.7 km along the valley floor with classic and skating tracks, with ski rental at the Gasslihof. Before ski touring in the Safiental, read the wildlife quiet zones the valley publishes each winter. I would pick Versam for a family week of easy skiing and nordic days; serious piste skiers should sleep in Flims or Laax.
