Hotels in Chamonix-Mont-Blanc

Chamonix is not one ski area but five, spread along the valley and not linked by lifts, so where you sleep decides your bus rides. For a first visit I would stay in central Chamonix, within walking distance of the Planpraz gondola to Brévent and of the Savoy nursery slopes, which you reach on foot from the centre. Strong skiers who want the Grands Montets every day should sleep in Argentière, about 8 km up the valley, because that steep, mostly red and black area starts there. Le Tour, at the head of the valley, suits beginners and intermediates on the Balme slopes; Les Praz, about 3 km from town, sits at the Flégère lift. The trap is the bus: the guest card your hotel gives you no longer makes buses free, it only brings discounts on passes of two days or more, while a valid Compagnie du Mont-Blanc ski pass is accepted on board. The card does still make the Mont-Blanc Express train free between Servoz and Vallorcine. None of the 30 hotels on our site is labelled ski-in ski-out, which is honest for Chamonix: here you walk or ride to the lift. Twenty-four of them have a spa and 19 a pool.

Chamonix-Mont-Blanc is a mountaineering town at the foot of Mont Blanc whose ski areas, Brévent, Flégère, Grands Montets, Balme and Les Houches, are spread along the valley and linked by bus and train rather than by lifts. The right hotel depends on the area you will ski most: the town centre for Brévent and the nursery slopes, Argentière for the Grands Montets, Le Tour for Balme. I would recommend Chamonix to strong skiers, off-piste enthusiasts and mixed groups who want a real town after skiing. Families looking for ski-in ski-out convenience and one connected area will be happier in a purpose-built resort.

Appart'hôtel Bellamy Chamonix

Chamonix-Mont-Blanc

Family-friendly aparthotel with mountain views and ski storage

Why guests love it

The Bellamy gave us a proper family room with a fully equipped kitchen, so we cooked most evenings and saved restaurant nights for treats. Free private parking and ski storage made mornings smooth, and the minimarket on site covered the forgotten milk. We spent sunny late afternoons on the mountain-view terrace while the kids played. It is close to Chamonix attractions and the 9.4 guest rating matched our experience.

Auberge du Bois Prin

Chamonix-Mont-Blanc

Mont Blanc views, spa, and family ski convenience

Why guests love it

Auberge du Bois Prin felt like a proper mountain inn, with Mont Blanc views from our balcony every morning. What sold it for us as parents was the help with ski school arrangements and the shuttle to the slopes or town centre, so we never fought for parking. Ski storage kept the room tidy, and booking a massage at the spa after a long day was a real treat. The 9.4 rating from 381 reviews felt earned.

Why guests love it

Chalet-Hôtel Hermitage is a short walk from Chamonix town centre and the train station, which made arriving with luggage and kids simple. Our mountain-view room had its own balcony, and the alpine garden with outdoor saunas and a spa bath became our evening ritual under the peaks. Ski storage meant no wet gear in the room. It has the warm feel of a real chalet, and the 9.4 rating reflects how cared-for it felt.

Mont Blanc views, spa, and outdoor pool in Chamonix

Why guests love it

We were right at the foot of the Aiguille du Midi, which made the kids feel like real mountaineers every time they looked up. Our room was comfortable with Mont Blanc views, and dropping skis in the storage room before heading upstairs was a small luxury. The spa area was perfect after cold days, and when the sun came out the outdoor pool was the children's favourite spot. Small, friendly and easy with a family.

Why guests love it

The chalet style made it feel cosy from the moment we arrived, and our spacious room with a balcony and mountain views gave the kids room to play. The spa was a big hit: indoor pool for them, sauna and steam room for us, and the outdoor hot tub for everyone at dusk. We kept our skis in the storage room, and evenings by the fireplace in the bar were a lovely way to end each day.

Hôtel Mont-Blanc Chamonix

Chamonix-Mont-Blanc

Luxury stay with spa, pool, and Mont-Blanc views

Why guests love it

Hôtel Mont-Blanc is the five-star I recommend in central Chamonix for families and couples who want comfort and a short walk to shops and restaurants. The spa has a heated pool and an outdoor hot tub, which children and adults both appreciate after a day outside, and the rooms look out over the mountains. Bathrooms come with bathrobes and slippers, and there is a restaurant and bar on site. My advice: choose it for its central position and spa.

Why guests love it

This was our big treat trip and it delivered. The free shuttle to the slopes took all the stress out of mornings, and we left skis in the storage room so the rooms stayed calm. The kids swam in the indoor pool every afternoon and we tried the outdoor one too, then unwound in the spa. With two restaurants on site we never had to bundle tired children out again in the cold for dinner.

Refuge du Montenvers

Chamonix-Mont-Blanc

High-altitude refuge with mountain views and train access

Why guests love it

Arriving by train was half the adventure, and once the day visitors left we had the mountain almost to ourselves at 1913 metres. The 19th-century building has real atmosphere, and our room looked straight out at the peaks. Dinner at the restaurant was hearty French regional cooking, and the panoramic terrace over the Mer de Glace had the kids speechless. Pack light and expect simple comfort, not luxury.

We liked staying in Les Bossons, about 3 km from Chamonix, because evenings felt calm after busy days in town. We booked one of the apartments, which made life easier with kids: space to spread out and room for all our boots. The ski storage area meant no wet gear in the room. Every window seemed to frame the mountains, and the short drive into town was simple when we wanted shops or a change of scene.

Family ski

What to expect

  • Five separate ski areas along the valley: Brévent, Flégère, Grands Montets, Balme and Les Houches
  • Planpraz gondola to Brévent straight from the town centre
  • Savoy nursery slopes reachable on foot from central Chamonix
  • Mont-Blanc Express train free with the guest card between Servoz and Vallorcine
  • Compagnie du Mont-Blanc ski pass accepted on the valley buses

Local tips

  • ✓Match your base to your ski area: central Chamonix for Brévent, Argentière for the Grands Montets, Les Praz for Flégère and Le Tour for Balme, since the lifts do not join them.
  • ✓Do not count on the guest card for free buses: it only gives discounts on passes of two days or more, so carry your Compagnie du Mont-Blanc ski pass, which is scanned on board.
  • ✓Use the Mont-Blanc Express between Servoz and Vallorcine: with the guest card the train is free inside the valley and spares you a parking space at the lifts.
  • ✓First-timers can walk to the Savoy nursery slopes from the centre, with two drag lifts and a magic carpet, before moving up to the Funi 2000 area at Brévent.
  • ✓Night buses after 9 pm get no guest discount, so check the last return before choosing a hotel in Argentière or Le Tour if you plan evenings in town.
  • ✓The Vallée Blanche from the Aiguille du Midi runs about 20 km and is off-piste glacier terrain: book a mountain guide rather than following other skiers.

…

Frequently asked questions

Are there ski-in ski-out hotels in Chamonix?

Practically none in the resort sense. Chamonix is a town with five ski areas spread along the valley, and none of the 30 hotels on our site is labelled ski-in ski-out. The closest you get is a hotel near the Planpraz gondola in the centre, near the Grands Montets lift in Argentière or near Le Tour for Balme.

Where should I stay in Chamonix for skiing?

It depends on the area. Central Chamonix suits beginners and mixed groups, with the Planpraz gondola to Brévent and the Savoy nursery slopes on foot. Argentière suits experts who want the Grands Montets daily. Le Tour suits families skiing Balme, and Les Praz puts you at the Flégère lift, about 3 km from town.

Are the buses free in Chamonix?

Not with the guest card alone any more. The card your accommodation gives you brings discounts on bus passes of two days or more, not free travel, and no discount on night buses after 9 pm. A valid Compagnie du Mont-Blanc ski pass is accepted on board, and the card makes the Mont-Blanc Express train free between Servoz and Vallorcine.

Is Chamonix good for beginners?

It can be, if you choose well. The Savoy nursery slopes are reachable on foot from the centre, the Funi 2000 area at Brévent was built for beginners, and Les Houches and Le Tour have gentle slopes. Avoid basing a beginner in Argentière: the Grands Montets are mostly red and black.

Are Chamonix's ski areas connected?

No. Brévent and Flégère, the Grands Montets, Balme and Les Houches are separate areas with their own lifts, so moving between them means a bus or the Mont-Blanc Express train. That is why the location of your hotel matters more here than in a linked resort, and why one ski pass covering several areas is worth checking.

Do Chamonix hotels have spas and pools?

Many do. Of the 30 hotels on our site, 24 carry a spa or wellness label and 19 have a pool or whirlpool, and 28 are tagged for family skiing. Since nobody skis to the door in Chamonix, a hotel with a spa near a bus stop or the train is a sensible way to finish the day.

We earn a commission when you book through some links on this site, at no extra cost to you. It never changes which hotels we list or how we rank them.
