Alpenapartments Unterschlag has been recently renovated, and our elegant unit with a private balcony and garden views felt fresh and spotless. The pool with a view was the highlight: the kids swam while we watched the light fade over the mountains. We also used the sauna and fitness centre after skiing. Free WiFi worked well throughout. With a 9.7 rating, it lived up to every expectation. Peaceful and beautifully kept.

TAUROA Winterstellgut earned its 9.7 from us with its calm setting and lovely mountain views. Our room had parquet floors, a private bathroom and a desk, handy for some quiet planning in the evenings. The on-site restaurant was excellent, and the coffee shop became our afternoon stop for cake with the kids after skiing. On sunny days the garden and terrace were perfect for sitting outside. Free WiFi too. Peaceful and stylish.

Sporthotel Dachstein West is the simple, family-friendly base I recommend in Annaberg, in the Lammer Valley. The ski lift is 150 metres away, which keeps mornings with children short, and the rooms look towards the Dachstein and Tennengebirge mountains. A restaurant on site, free WiFi and parking cover the practical side. My advice: choose it for its position near the lift and its views rather than for spa facilities, which the hotel does not list.

Salzburger Dolomitenhof ticked every family box for us. We skied right to the door, and the kids made a beeline for the rooftop pool every afternoon, swimming with mountain views all around. Our room had a private bathroom and a balcony facing the peaks. The sauna, spa and open-air bath were our grown-up reward, and the children's playground and sun terrace kept everyone happy on sunny days. Great fun for families.
