Banff is a national-park town, not a ski village: the three ski areas (Mt. Norquay, Banff Sunshine and Lake Louise) are all outside it, so evenings are long and spent in town. That is why a fireplace here is worth choosing on purpose. The hard part is that hotel listings use the word loosely, for a wood fire you light yourself, a gas insert in one loft suite, an electric strip in the lobby or a fire table on the patio.
Which Banff hotels have a wood-burning fireplace in every room? Only three in our selection, and two of them are neighbours on Tunnel Mountain. Buffalo Mountain Lodge, at 700 Tunnel Mountain Road, has a stone wood fireplace in all four room types, and housekeeping restocks the firewood every day. The Hidden Ridge Resort, a little further up, gives each condo a wood fireplace with split logs left outside the door and kindling at the front desk. The trade-off is distance: Buffalo Mountain Lodge is about a 20-minute walk from Banff Avenue, and Hidden Ridge is easier with a car or the Roam bus.
Storm Mountain Lodge is the outlier, and I would only book it knowing what it is. Its log cabins date from 1922 and each has a stone wood-burning fireplace, but the lodge sits on Highway 93 South, roughly 25 minutes from both Banff and Lake Louise, off-grid and without phone signal on the approach. From mid-October to mid-May the steep driveway calls for winter tyres. Truck traffic is audible from the front cabins, so ask for one at the back, facing the forest. For skiers it means driving to every lift, which is fine if Lake Louise is your main hill.
In town, the fireplace is almost always gas and tied to one room category. At Charltons Banff it is the King Loft Suite; at Canalta Lodge, at 545 Banff Avenue, the loft rooms, which also have a kitchenette and a whirlpool tub; at The Rundlestone Lodge, the spa-bath suites; at Banff Caribou Lodge, the Corner Loft Suite with its whirlpool; at the Rimrock, the Signature Suites on Sulphur Mountain. The Juniper, on Mount Norquay Road, has a King Fireplace Suite with a jetted bath and the shortest drive to Norquay. Book the named suite, or you will get a standard room without a fire.

With a family or a group, I would take a condo at The Hidden Ridge Resort for the kitchen and the outdoor hot pool, and accept some dated decor. I would not choose a gas-fireplace hotel without booking the exact suite, and I would not choose Storm Mountain Lodge for a ski week unless I wanted to drive every morning and switch off completely in the evening.
