Park City hotels with a fireplace in the room

For a fireplace in your own room close to the lifts, I would sleep on Main Street in Old Town: The Caledonian sits at 751 Main Street, right above the Town Lift, and every condo has a gas fireplace. Couples who ski Deer Valley should look at The Chateaux Deer Valley, across from Silver Lake Village at mid-mountain. The 18 hotels on this page average 8.7 out of 10 across 2,333 reviews, but they are not equal on the one thing you came for. Five describe a fireplace inside the room or apartment, Marriott's MountainSide puts one in its villas, Park City Slope Side - Canyons mentions one without saying where, four have a shared outdoor fireplace, and for seven I could not confirm one at all.

Park City is an old silver-mining town turned ski town, with Main Street climbing the hill and the Town Lift crossing above it. Park City Mountain alone covers 7,300 acres and 41 lifts from a 6,800 ft base to a 10,026 ft summit, with 355 inches of average snowfall. Salt Lake City airport is about 35 minutes away, and Park City Transit has run its buses fare-free since 1975, so a car is optional if you sleep in Old Town.

Which base and which kind of fire

Park City is three ski bases in one town: the Town Lift on Main Street and the Mountain Village base of Park City Mountain, Canyons Village on the other side of the same 7,300-acre resort, and Deer Valley to the south. A fireplace hotel only works if it also puts you at the right lift, so the base matters as much as the hearth.

The Caledonian is the one I would book first. Its 1, 2 and 3-bedroom condos on Main Street each have a gas fireplace and a full kitchen, many add a balcony with a private hot tub, and the Town Lift loads downstairs. It scores 9.9 on 27 reviews, the highest of the 18, and is described as ski-in/ski-out. The catch is size: the building has only 11 condos, there is no daily housekeeping, and the garage entrance is on Park Avenue under the Town Lift ski bridge, which first-timers often miss in the dark.

Skiers Lodge goes furthest inside the room: each one has a full kitchen, a hot tub and a fireplace, a short walk from the Park City Museum on Main Street. It is also the lowest-rated hotel here, at 7.7 on 45 reviews, so I would only choose it if the in-room hot tub matters more to you than polish. Sweetwater Lift Lodge, at 1255 Empire Avenue, is a five-minute walk from the Park City Mountain base and has 880 reviews at 8.5, but only some of its suites and lofts have a fireplace.

For Deer Valley, The Chateaux Deer Valley is the obvious pick: 9.3 on 81 reviews, gas fireplaces in the lodge-style rooms, a heated pool, a hot tub and a spa. It faces Silver Lake Village, the mid-mountain hub, so you start the day high on the hill rather than at the Snow Park base. It also has ski storage, so skis and boots stay downstairs instead of in your room. Remember that Deer Valley is a skiers-only mountain: a snowboarder in your group would ride Park City Mountain instead, which is a bus ride away.

At Park City Mountain's own base, Marriott's MountainSide sits by the Payday chairlift, and its villas are described with a stone fireplace in the living room. The resort has an outdoor pool, a sauna, a hot tub and ski storage, and its rooms come with kitchenettes for self-catering. Park Plaza Resort, an Ascend Collection hotel, has a gas fireplace in most rooms and a large hot tub, but it is a short drive from Deer Valley and Canyons, not a walk: plan on the free Park City Transit bus or a car.

Four hotels give you a fire you share rather than one in your room. Treasure Mountain Inn at the top of Main Street has an outdoor fireplace, a hot tub and a Mexican restaurant, about half a mile on foot or by the free trolley to the Town Lift. GetAways at Park Regency Resort adds an outdoor fireplace to its indoor pool and ski shuttle. Main & SKY, near the Park City Museum, pairs one with mountain views, and the Slope Side Studio in Canyons Village has one beside its heated pool, hot tub and steam room.

Seven hotels on this page are strong ski bases, but I could not confirm a fireplace in their rooms: Black Rock Mountain Resort (8.9 on 256 reviews), Park Regency, Marriott's Summit Watch on Main Street, Private Condos at Hotel Park City, Raintree's The Miners Club, Hotel Thaynes and Pendry Park City in Canyons Village. If you book one of them, pick a room category whose own description names a fireplace. Park City Slope Side - Canyons does mention a fireplace with mountain views, but with 7 reviews it has the thinnest track record.

A traveler's perspective

I would book a fireplace room in Park City for a couples' ski week, not for a group chasing first chair on every base. For that, my order is The Caledonian if you ski Park City Mountain and want Main Street dinners on foot, and The Chateaux Deer Valley if you only ski Deer Valley and want to start at Silver Lake. I would skip the outdoor-fireplace hotels if a private fire is the point, and skip Skiers Lodge if you care about reviews more than a hot tub in the room. Snowboarders should not book Deer Valley at all.

The Caledonian by All Seasons Resort Lodging in Park City has ski-to-door access, so children can ski back to the building at the end of the day. Each apartment has a kitchen, a private bathroom and a fireplace, which suits families who want to cook and stay in. Ski storage and a hot tub are on site, and Park City Museum is a short walk away. I note that 27 reviews average 9.9.

Why guests love it

Being adjacent to Deer Valley Ski Resort, The Chateaux Deer Valley lets families start the morning on the snow rather than in the car. I would ask for one of the lodge-inspired rooms with a kitchen, which also comes with a fireplace for evenings in. After skiing, the heated pool and hot tub suit children, while parents can book spa services. Ski storage keeps boots and helmets out of the room.

Mountain views, heated pool, and easy access to Park City slopes

Why guests love it

Hotel Thaynes worked well for us because it sits between Park City Mountain and Deer Valley, a short drive to either, so we skied both. The indoor-outdoor heated pool was the kids' favourite, swimming from inside out into the snow air. Our room had views of the Wasatch Mountains, a big flat-screen TV for movie nights and nice designer toiletries. On-site ski hire and storage saved us carrying rental gear around.

The Private Condos at Hotel Park City gave us an apartment feel with hotel perks. Our unit had a fully equipped kitchen and a private balcony with mountain views, perfect for morning coffee while the kids slept in. We still had access to the spa, the swimming pool with a view and the fitness center, and on lazy nights we ate at the restaurant and bar downstairs. A comfortable base close to the slopes.

Why guests love it

This studio in Canyons Village was compact but clever, with a kitchenette, private bathroom and free WiFi, enough for us and our young son. The real draw was the shared facilities: a heated pool with a view, hot tub, sauna and steam room, where we spent every late afternoon. The outdoor fireplace was a lovely spot for hot drinks after dinner, and there is a fitness room if you still have energy.

Black Rock Mountain Resort is a four-star in Park City that I recommend to families who want resort facilities and an easy restaurant on site. Family rooms have balconies and mountain views, and the outdoor pool, hot tub, sauna and fitness centre cover the hours after skiing. The family-friendly restaurant serves American cuisine for brunch, lunch and dinner, which keeps meals simple with children. Guests rate it 8.9 across 256 reviews, a dependable record.

Villas at the Park City Mountain Village base, a short walk from the Payday Express

Why guests love it

The First Time lift and the conveyor lifts at the Village base are a short walk from Marriott's MountainSide, which makes it one of the easiest Park City addresses for a family's first ski days. Villas come with kitchens or kitchenettes, so breakfast before ski school and early dinners for tired children happen in the room. The heated outdoor pool and the hot tubs are the afternoon plan. Older children who ski well can lap Payday and Crescent from the door. The downsides: this is a timeshare resort, so expect the setup of a residence rather than a full-service hotel, and Main Street is a 10 to 15 minute walk rather than outside the door. For a family that wants to ski every morning without a shuttle, I would still rank it high in Park City.

Raintree's The Miners Club offers ski-to-door access in Park City, and I recommend it to families who want kitchens and space more than hotel service. Family rooms come with kitchens and balconies, the outdoor pool is open all year, and there is a hot tub and a games room for evenings. Ski storage keeps gear out of the living area. Local tips

  1. 1At The Caledonian, drive in by Park Avenue: the garage entrance is under the Town Lift ski bridge, not on Main Street, and it is easy to miss after dark.
  2. 2At Sweetwater Lift Lodge, a fireplace comes only with some suites and lofts, so book a unit type whose description names it rather than a standard studio.
  3. 3Snowboarders cannot ride Deer Valley, which is skiers-only; a mixed group is better off at a fireplace hotel on Main Street near the Town Lift.
  4. 4From Treasure Mountain Inn at the top of Main Street, take the free Main Street trolley down to the Town Lift instead of walking half a mile in ski boots.
  5. 5Park City Transit is fare-free and links Old Town Transit Center, Canyons Village and Deer Valley, so Park Plaza Resort works without a rental car.
  6. 6Staying at The Chateaux Deer Valley puts you at Silver Lake Village, mid-mountain, so you skip the morning climb out of the Snow Park base.
