Dog-friendly hotels in Hakuba: which ones really take pets

Which Hakuba hotels actually accept dogs? Of the five hotels on this page, three hold up when you check them. Starry Residence Suite is shown as pet-friendly by Japan Ski Experience and by Expedia, Kizuna Lodge is described as a pet-friendly lodge on its Airbnb page, and Hakuba's official accommodation directory calls Hakuba Inn Bloom pet-friendly. Hakuba Panorama Hotel and Hakuba Ryujin Onsen are the opposite case: Booking.com, Expedia and Trip.com all state that pets are not allowed. None of the three publishes a size limit for dogs. Do not confuse Kizuna Lodge with Wadano Lodge, a different property nearby that does not take pets.

Why base yourself at Happo-One with a dog? Starry Residence Suite is the only one of the three on the slopes: its apartments are steps from Hakuba Happo-One Ski Resort, so a morning on the snow, a lunchtime walk and an afternoon session fit in one day without a car. The units range from a one-bedroom with loft to three bedrooms, each with a kitchen, and parking is free. That kitchen matters on a dog trip: eating in on most evenings means the dog is not left alone in the apartment during a long dinner in Echoland.

Kizuna Lodge and Hakuba Inn Bloom are the quieter options. Kizuna Lodge is in Lower Wadano, at the base of Happo-One and surrounded by Wadano forest, a four-minute walk from Hummingbird Onsen; guests often mention the lodge's own dogs, which tells you something about the welcome but also means your dog will not be the only one around. Hakuba Inn Bloom, in Misorano, has two-bedroom units for up to five people with full kitchens, free parking, separate bathrooms and a short walk to the Echoland restaurants. Its free shuttle covers Happo-One, Goryu and Hakuba 47.

Can a dog go up the mountain in Hakuba in winter? Iwatake is the resort to plan around. Its gondola Noah carries pets, and the IWATAKE WHITE PARK at the top has a dog run on the snow, open to visitors who are not skiing. Iwatake asks that rabies and combination vaccines were given between two weeks and one year before the visit, so pack the certificates. At Happo, dogs and cats on a leash or harness ride the Adam gondola from Happo Station up to Usagidaira, but only in the green season (30 May to 3 November in 2026), and the chairlifts above it do not take pets.

Getting there with a dog changes the route. Hakuba Station is on JR East's Oito Line, and JR East only lets a dog ride if it is fully enclosed in a carrier whose length, width and height add up to 120 cm or less, with dog and carrier 10 kg or less, plus a luggage ticket bought at the gate. Carrying the dog in your arms or on a leash is not allowed. A dog above that weight cannot take the train at all, which is why I would drive, and why free parking at Starry Residence Suite and Hakuba Inn Bloom counts.

Flying a dog to Japan for a ski holiday takes months, not days. The Animal Quarantine Service requires an ISO 11784/11785 microchip implanted before the first rabies shot, at least two rabies vaccinations, an antibody test of at least 0.5 IU/ml, a 180-day wait counted from the blood sample, and a notification at least 40 days before arrival. The second rabies shot has to come at least 30 days after the first. A dog that lands short of the 180 days is held for the difference. For a January trip, the blood sample has to be taken before the previous July.
