Hotels in Brienz

Grandhotel Giessbach dates from 1874 and sits secluded on a hill above Lake Brienz, and arriving on Europe's oldest funicular was a thrill for the whole family. Our room had real 19th-century charm and a view over the lake and the Giessbach Waterfall that we could not stop looking at. We alternated between the two restaurants, and in the warmer season the outdoor pool is a lovely bonus. A one-of-a-kind historic stay.

Bretterhotel was a warm, family-friendly base in Brienz. Our family room had mountain views that the kids loved, and the comfortable, modern rooms made the week easy. The restaurant served local cuisine that went down well with everyone. On sunny afternoons we relaxed on the sun terrace while the children played in the garden, and the nearby Ballenberg Open-Air Museum made a great day out when we wanted a break from the snow.

Hotel Lindenhof offers panoramic views of Lake Brienz with the Brienzer Rothorn behind, and we never tired of that scene. Our room was one of the themed ones, decorated with a large wall painting that the kids found fascinating. After days out, we used the swimming pool and the Finnish sauna, and dinners at the restaurant featured hearty regional cooking. A quirky, characterful base with a view that steals the show.

Hotel Wildbach gave our family a room with a private bathroom and a balcony with striking views over the lake and mountains, the best part of every morning. The continental breakfast set us up for days exploring the region, and local attractions are all within easy reach. On sunny afternoons the sun terrace was a nice place to relax, and the free WiFi helped us plan outings. Simple, friendly and good for families.
